Devils Garden Alternate Start (Easy Drop off, all the arches, then drop down into the Valley and Hayduke. Only 2.5 miles longer than starting at the official start. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Klondike Bluffs HDT Start (Untested Hayduke Trail start.)
Arches Slickrock Alternate (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Moab Packraft Alternate (No permit required for private party on river from Hwy 191 bridge to Canyonlands park boundary. 22 miles to last exit Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013 Flatwater the whole way. We did it in $20 Intek Explorer 200s.)
Lockhart Cliff Alternate (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Wash Alternate (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Indian Creek Exit Alternate (Cairns seen at intervals suggesting this is a regularly used route. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)

Road to Fable Trailhead Alternate (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Dark Canyon Plateau Alternate (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Youngs Creek HDT Detail (Look out for spire as a guide as to where you need to descend. Upper cliff band is the trickiest to get down.)
Wet feet/Poison Ivy Bypass (Traverse on top of lowest cliff band. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Hite Shortcut (Easy scrambling Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Red Benches Alternate (This route more-or-less follows A. Skurka's route. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Dirty Devil Escape Alternate (Because the Dirty Devil sucks. Route is easy apart from one very exposed 20ft long slickrock scramble. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Uranium Mines Detour (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Aresenic Alternate to Hwy 95 (Same distance as HDT Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Little Egypt Alternate (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Cow Pastures Road Alternate (Probably better than the route we took.)
South Creek Ridge (A little overgrown and rocky in places but probably better than HDT route. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Below Tarantula Alternate 1 (Very tricky, not for most people. There are three seperate cliff bands and it took us a while to find one route through all three of them. The middle band was particularly tricky involving a pack pass and buddy spot. Downclimb is overhanging near the bottom with poor footholds and soft rock (and below this is a drop of a few feet with boulders that would make a poor landing for a fall). Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Below Tarantula Alternate 2 (Good route. Pretty straightforward. Passes by some interesting coal exposures with small amber. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Swap Canyon Entrance route (Basically HDT. Detail for reference. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Muley Shortcut (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Moody Chinle Descent (Basically HDT route. Detail for reference. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Escalante Packraft (Miserable scrub-bash or world-class packraft? 26 miles. Escalante was at 20 cfs when we passed through. Heavy growth on banks (Sept 2013). We made about 1mi/hr progress while working very hard. Packraft would have averaged 4-5 mi/hr easy. Conditions ideal above 2 cfs. Well worth the effort of stashing or carrying a packraft to here. http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/escalante.html#.Ua4X_kDqmAl)
Scorpion Exit to Hole-In-The-Wall Escape (Tamarisk and willows horribly overgrown in Escalante. Despite lots of effort we were only making 1mi/hr of progress. Meanwhile the river looked wonderfully packraftable at probably 4mi/hr! So we had enough and took a chance on Scorpion. At least 3 different escape route. Nice canyon with a riparian lower section and big alcoves. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Escalante Bypass Alternate (Untested. Good alternative if travel in the Escalante is grimly slow. Exposed 5.4 moves to get down the rib above the arch into Coyote Gulch.)
Middle Trail - 50 Ridge Detail (The HDT blue line failed hard at following the route here.)
Cottonwood Road Alternate to Hwy 89 (Untested. (we got a hitch down Cottonwood) 1.4 miles east down Hwy 89 to Ranger Station - Fresh good water!)
Bryce Cutoff Alternate (Untested. ~5 miles Hwy walking.)
Long Canyon Rd Alternate (Easy, pleasant. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
N Coyote Buttes/Wave Detour (The one, the only. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Lower Buckskin (Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Lower Paria (Big Spring- fantastic flow to quickly fill bottles but slightly alkalic. Last Reliable Spring- best tasting water but half dozen slow drips, utilize all water storage containers simultaneously. Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert September 2013)
Sand Hill Crack Route (Great route! Tested. Nicolas Barth Ryan "Tuna Helper" Weidert October 2013)

Grapevine Packraft Escape (Good route. I know this goes from hiking up to the Tonto from Grapevine on a river trip. Nicolas Barth.)

Driver's Route
Hwy 389 Drive (About 8.33 mi from 389/89A junction in Fredonia.)
Best Case Scenario (Park here. Note large parking area and fenceline. If you don't make it this far no problem. We will plan to find you somewhere between here and Hack Reservior at the 22.8mi turnoff. We will be aiming to camp near Willow Spring (0.5mi downstream) or here the evening we hope to meet you. Worst case scenario: If we don't meet in the evening you should hold your position untill at least noon the following day. If we don't appear leave us water (2 gallons) and food (snacks, etc). Then drive to Colorado City where we will try to meet you or call you.)
Junction (stay left (downstream))
Might be tricky (Road being washed out from below)
Might be tricky
Might be rocky
Might be rocky
About 22.8 mi (Turn left here. At about 23.1 you will pass a corral on your left, followed by a 90 degree left turn. At about 23.5mi the road enters a wash/valley which it stays in all the way to Willow Spring. The road crosses the wash many times (~22 times to a junction and then another 10 more or so). Continue only if the road is not washed out and is safe to drive. At about 27.6mi there is a fork-stay left (downvalley) and shortly cross the wash again. At about 29.7mi the road may be washed out (if so stop)? At about 32.4mi the road looks like it deteriorates at a parking spot of sorts just before a fenceline (park here. If you made it this far awesome!). At 32.9mi (0.5mi walk along ATV/foot trail) is Willow Spring on the right side of the wash.)

Mt Turnbull Rd but might not be labeled. 4WD. Put car in Neutral, shift 4WD stick into 4H position, put car back in drive. It will say 4WD on top of dash. (car can be put in Park while in 4WD- no problem) Stay on main road for about 22.8 miles. Detailed description: Cross cattle guard. Go straight on main road. (Crosses a wash at about 2.6mi, another wash at about 4.3mi, crosses a cattle guard at about 5.2mi, continue straight through minor junction at about 6.2mi, continue straight at 7.2mi, crosses vegetated wash at about 7.6mi, crosses a cattle guard at 7.9mi, stay right (straight) at major junction at about 8.4mi, crosses a cattle guard at 12.5mi, 12.8mi stay straight past minor junctions, at about 14.7mi stay straight (right), at 16.2 stay straight (right) on main road, at 16.9mi you will drive past a reservoir/pond on the left, at about 17.6mi the road bends to theright and then later bends back to the left, at 18.1 the road is straight again, at about 20.1mi cross a cattle guard and stay straight (left) on main road, at about 22.8mi turn left off of the main road (if you pass a reservoir on your left you went too far).)

Sockdolager Rapid!!! (5-7) Drop 19' (Big rapid. Usually pretty clean with no major holes. Long, big wave train. Some of the biggest waves in the GC. This would be absolutely terrifying in a packraft. Maybe ok? Impossible to bypass. Best option would be to hitch a ride through with a rafting group. Otherwise escape is possible up Hance Creek on true left. Best option would be a steep climb up to the Tonto Platform.)

5.4 Exit to South
5.4 Entrance (Exposed 5.4 down rib over arch Easy-moderate downclimb with exposure. Only one real "tough" part. Dropping your pack, climbing down, then grabbing it would probably do the trick. There is great camping and wonderful spring water in Coyote Gulch on the outside of the next turn downstream. Dropping packs and hiking downstream to the Escalante (to see Stevens Arch) is well worth it - both in seeing how awesome Coyote is (and being an easy hike) and not having to hike the Escalante River to get there. There are other springs down that way too.)
