Lane Peak is home to two of the most iconic couloirs in Washington State: The Zipper and The Fly. Easy access, steep north-facing couloir skiing, and spectacular views of the south side of Mount Rainier mean that this peak should be on everyone's tick list. Lane Peak can also make for a great short tour if the Nisqually-Longmire Road opens late or if visibility precludes a trip higher on Rainier. Tour: From the parking lot, take the trail to the bridge across Narada Falls. From here, drop slightly and traverse skier's left at an elevation of about 4300 feet. Maintain this elevation until you hit Tatoosh Creek. Once you are across Tattosh Creek, you should have views of Lane Peak. Acend directly to the base at 5000 feet (1 hour to here). If you instead want to begin this tour at Reflection Lakes, park at the west end of Reflection Lakes, climb the snowbank, and drop down Tattosh Creek until you are at the base of Lane Peak. From the base of Lane Peak, you are looking directly up The Fly. The Zipper enters from the skier's right. Both lines are skiable, with The Fly being the easier option. Whichever one you choose, tour up the apron as high as you can until you are forced to boot the rest of the way. Descent: Ski your line o ascent, giving thought to the conditions encountered on the way up (3–4 hours total).
