Exploration of the three main upper Stillwater Creek basins: West, Middle and Amethyst. Relatively speaking, not much hiking; two nights in each campsight, for a total of six nights out?7 days. Most of the route is later backtracked, sadly, but what can you do? It's three out and backs normally, with very little opportunity for looping. I thought about making a lollipop out of it, but it would require very steep off-trail scrambling on scree over big ridges to work out.
Leg 1 (Hike from Trailhead into West Basin. Spend two nights here; one full day exploring after arriving.)
Leg 2 (Hike from West Basin to Middle Basin.)
Leg 3 (Middle Basin to Amethyst Basin.)
Leg 4 (Back to the car...:()
First campsite (Off the trail; closer to the peaks. Well positioned to make an attempt on Kletting and/or A-1 in the morning.)
Second campsite (Spend two night here as well; Middle Basin is bigger than West and deserves plenty of time to explore; even if I do manage to arrive at campsite earlier.)
Third Campsite (Again; plan on spending two days, to better explore the Amethyst Basin. It'll take all day to get there from Middle, so the exploration will take the whole second day.)
