This is a mild run with some Class I and II riffle and shoal-style rapids interspersed throughout but concentrated in one, six-mile section according to Virginia Whitewater. The rapid names are Pettijohn Island Falls, Patterson Shoals, Wreck Island Falls, Riverville Falls and Higgenbotham Falls. There are no dams to portage in this section which is fantastic considering how many other dams nearby there are. This is the only other stretch of the James during its journey through the Piedmont that has some frequent rapids other than at Richmond, where the Class III-IV fall line rapids are. This proposed overnighter could be accomplished by biking upstream from the Bent Creek boat ramp to the Joshua Falls boat ramp (~18. mi). There are several islands in the river that look ok for camping on. The land on either side of the river is private though. The paddle is approximately 19.5 to 20 mi long. Probably too long to do in one stretch in a packraft unless there is a lot of water. I'd break it up by doing some paddling on the first day after the bike ride.
